Oh no! It’s December 31st and you’re sitting on the couch, sipping hot chocolate and staring into the fire. This whole year has flashed by in the blink of an eye and you’re thinking. “What have I achieved this year?” “Am I the person I thought I would become these past 365 days?” “Have I progressed as an adult?” “Have there been any changes in my life?”

I completely understand because I have been there. This was me last year. I started going after my goals quite late and did not get to accomplish as much as I had hoped to. I have since learned from my experiences and have come up with 10 simple ways to start your new year right! If you’re ready to kick-start your new year, keep reading. If you’re ready to make a difference in your life this year, don’t miss a thing!

Wake Up Earlier

Yes! Wake up earlier. It never ceases to amaze me how much of a difference an extra hour or two can make. I used to get up around 6 which would give me just enough time to get ready and go to work. I didn’t have time for breakfast, and I didn’t have time for me. This meant that I was usually cranky and tired. I also usually got to work just in time.

Since setting my alarm clock an hour early, I have seen a vast difference in my morning routines. I now had time to relax, eat and plan my day. When you wake up early you’re able to take things a bit more slowly. You are able to properly refresh yourself, exercise, eat, get yourself in order and begin your day like the boss you are. 

If it’s hard for you to get up earlier, I suggest going to bed early. The average adult needs about 7 to 9 hours of sleep and I highly suggest that you go to bed earlier so that you can begin your day earlier. You can do it. I believe in you.

Set Short Term Goals

It can be difficult trying to figure out what you want to do with your life. Even if you have many degrees and have gone to many schools, it can be very hard to understand what you need to do with your life. From experience, I know it can also be difficult trying to figure out how to go about the whole process. I’ve found what helps me alot is setting short term goals. Not only do I set short term goals but I make a detailed plan of how I plan to achieve them along with a time-frame and necessary steps.

If you have an idea about what you would like to do but not exactly how to do it, grab a pen and a piece of paper. Make a list of all the things you enjoy doing and those things which you can make a career from. See if there is anything similar between your two lists and go from there. Sometimes seeing the entire, big picture can be difficult. If you break down the bigger picture into small, easily doable parts you will find that getting closer to the end goal is much more in your reach than you thought. Be intentional about setting these goals and I guarantee you’ll see the fruits of your labour.

One of the best feelings in the world is knowing that you are healthy and thus able to fully enjoy life. Not only is being healthy a great feeling, it also acts as one less thing you need to worry about this year. Last year, I decided that I would walk everywhere, which is doable but difficult on my little island. This meant that I would have to walk downhill for 15 minutes to get to the supermarket, bank and convenience store. It also meant that I would need to walk 20 to 30 minutes uphill back home.

I also decided to drink water only during the week and save any juices for the weekend. This was a big thing for me as I really love juices and it is difficult for me to not drink too much. I took small steps and I encourage you to take small steps as well.

Start an exercise plan where you take at least 1500 steps per day. Try to incorporate more fruits and nuts into each meal. Challenge yourself to a “no-carb” month. Take charge of your body this year and you’ll reap the benefits once you have decided to get into shape.

Have you ever noticed that some of the biggest, most successful people are very close to their families? Do you realize that for many in power, time with their family is a precious commodity? If you haven’t, you should. Success and wealth are great. If you’ve got it, congratulations, but it means absolutely nothing if you have no-one to share it with. When money is all that matters to you then life is worth nothing.

At the end of the day, your money, your work and your papers won’t give you hugs. After it’s all said and done, your desk can’t make you laugh. Make time for your family. If you aren’t married and have no family but really want one, go for it. You will regret it later on if you don’t. If you are married and do have a family, take a vacation with your spouse. Play some football with your children. You’ll see the difference it makes in your productivity and they’ll see how important they are in your life. Try it.

One small word can make a difference. An additional act of kindness can change the world. These sayings aren’t made up. They are true. They are relevant, especially in this modern society where so many are so cruel. Can you imagine a world where everyone is nice to each other?  Could you imagine a society without violence and sadness? Is it that crazy to think that if each person were to reach out to another, this kind of world could happen? I think not.

This year, when you step outside, say hi to your neighbour. Smile to others walking by. If you have spare change or food, give it to someone in need. Volunteer your time at a shelter or youth centre. You’ll find that your outlook on life begins to change. Soon, you’ll realize things aren’t as bad as they seem. You will also realize that you are blessed and a lot happier than you previously thought. Your daily life becomes less of a chore and more of a blessing.

We are halfway there on our “10 simple ways to start your new year right” list. Thanks so much making it this far. Nothing hurts a new year or a new beginning than when you walk into it carrying the baggage of the past. There is no bigger barrier to a new beginning than dragging everything that happened to you previously along for the journey. I’ve got one piece of advice. Let it go. Throw it away. Break that chain. It’s okay to mess up. At some time in life we have all failed. That’s a part of life.

What is not okay is you letting those mistakes dictate all the other aspects of your life. The thing I dislike most is when you allow your past to dictate your future. This year you need to start forgiving yourself. You need to stop dwelling on past mistakes and move on. Learn from the things that have happened and use those lessons to better yourself and make a better year.

Love yourself. On the heels of forgiving yourself of past mistakes you have to learn to love yourself. Loving yourself is key to a happy and successful year and life. If you love yourself, it makes so many other aspects of your life that much more enjoyable. Honestly, if you can’t love yourself then it is impossible for you to love anyone else. Shocking I know, but true nonetheless. 

Any true act of love comes from within. This is impossible, if within you, there is no love. So learning to love yourself will have a huge impact on how you see yourself and everyone else this new year. If you love yourself, your outlook on life will change. Plus you’re fantastic. Do not allow small faults to prevent you from loving the bigger you. Everyone ha faults, you just need to learn to embrace them.

My mother always told me that the gift of a friend is a very powerful thing. She was right, as she normally is. Lol, love you mommy. This world has taught us that each man should stand on his own, and we don’t need anyone but ourselves to be happy. That’s so far from the truth. A good friend can make such a difference in your life and you can do the same for others. 

So many people try to go through life on their own and fail. There are so many people that struggle with everyday tasks and experiences yet refuse to let anyone in. Please do not be this person. This year, I challenge you to be deliberate about making new friends. Step outside your comfort zone and strive to become that good friend that someone out there needs. Be deliberate about reaching out to those who need your help. You’ll be surprised how different both your lives become.

Doing new things can be the scariest thing in the world. That what makes life interesting though, don’t you think? This was the biggest lesson I learned this past year. I launched my blog this year, which was hugely scary for me. I also traveled to a number of places, by plane, and if you know me, you know that I am terrified of airplanes. Every month I challenge myself to take a leap of faith and try something new. 

I pass this challenge unto you. Whether it’s a new skill or food, or a new adventure, I put myself out there. I encourage you to put yourself out there too. And you know what, the levels you will grow, both in your personal and professional life will astound you. If you are terrified of heights, climb a mountain. If you’ve never been to a new place, travel the world. Do something that scares you. Try something that stretches you.

Food is life for many people. It is just an amazing experience to bite into something delicious. Have you ever watched the Food Network and seen something so delicious you wished you could have it at that moment? Hands up so I can see them. I know you have because it’s happened to me. It is such a satisfying feeling when you know that not only can you make that dish, but you can do it better. 

Learning to cook is a fantastic skill because it gives you so much freedom. You are able to recreate meals you’ve seen on TV or in restaurants. Planning meals and eating healthy becomes an easy task because you have the means to plan AND execute. No longer are you bound by what restaurants offer. You can now have restaurant-quality meals at home.

    Great suggestions. I’ve definitely found that waking up earlier has allowed me to fit in time for fitness! If I just get up right away, I knockout two of them in one (both getting up early and in shape)!

    These are really attainable! Several of them are already my resolutions. I’m trying to have only one source of sugar for the day. I don’t drink juices often so that part’s easy but pastries, chocolate, cookies, biscuits etc. are my weaknesses. Here’s to better self control this year and more exercise. 🙂 I’m aiming for 30mins every single day of any type- kickboxing, jumprope, yoga, stretches etc. ‘Cause really, any exercise is still better than sedentary, right? All the best for 2018. 🥂

    The first 3 are definitely on my list. I need to be an adult and wake up earlier. Adulting is so hard. My new years resolutions are summed up in 2 words: health + discomfort. I need to walk towards discomfort or my life will not change.
