Do you suffer from limiting beliefs? Do you even know what limiting beliefs are? I didn’t and for years on top of years, I wondered why I wasn’t as successful as my friends even though I worked twice as hard. Or why I was forever stuck between a wall and another wall. It wasn’t until I saw so many other people who came from even worse backgrounds than I did succeed that I realized something. Whenever someone asked them what set them apart from their peers, do you know what they would always say? “It’s because I believe.” And they are absolutely right. In this post, I’m going to show you exactly why your limiting beliefs are keeping you unsuccessful and how to overcome them.
“You can have anything you want if you are willing to give up the belief that you can’t have it.” Robert Anthony
Here’s Why Your Limiting Beliefs Are Holding You Back:
How many times in your life have you used the words “All the good ones are taken” or the words “I’m afraid of trying and failing”? Probably way too many times than you can count. It’s probably become so natural to say them that they come out of your mouth before you even have the chance to think about it.
Do you know that, as innocent as these phrases might seem, they are powerful, limiting beliefs? You see, a limiting belief is anything that you tell yourself that restricts the way you think or act. Simply believing these things prevents us from acting on or saying the things we really want to.
The more we use phrases that limit us in some way, shape or form, the less capable we become and the less likely we are to push past “boundaries” and become successful. These limiting beliefs keep us from a state of prosperity and in a poverty state of mind and existence, and here’s why:
THEY KEEP US LAZY
A few years ago, when I was in high school, I had serious self-esteem issues. The other girls around me were rich, fabulous and seemed to never have to study in order to get straight A’s. It was so frustrating.
Because of this, I believed that I could never be as good as they were and I didn’t have what it took to get to their level. Every time we’d take a test, they got A’s and I got a B+. After a while, I just stopped studying as much. It wasn’t worth the extra effort anyway, right?
That’s where my battle with laziness and procrastination began and you’ve probably had a similar experience as well.
“I can’t do this because of that…”
“There’s no way I’m ever going to be as good so why bother?”
We all want instant gratification from the things we do. I wanted an instant A and you probably want to start a job today and get a promotion next week. When things don’t happen the way we want them to that’s when the laziness kicks in.
Every single one of your limiting beliefs keeps you from making the kind of money you want to make and prevents you from getting that job you truly deserve because they make you lazy, unproductive and unmotivated. Your limiting beliefs also keep you feeling guilty because you know you should be getting things done but don’t.
It’s such a lose-lose situation.
So many people are living in a constant state of lack because they truly believe there is no other life out there for them and have thus stopped working the way they should be.
THEY RUIN OUR RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS
We have so many limiting beliefs that we aren’t even aware of and they affect our relationships with others on every level. Probably as a child you learned that marriages were imperfect and the people involved were always unhappy because all you ever saw your parents do was argue.
This subconscious belief stuck with you throughout the years and you vowed to yourself to never be put in a place where you could be hurt or rejected ever again.
These learned beliefs about relationships act like a virus that carries itself from relationship to relationship infecting you and everyone else around you.
You’re incapable of finding love because you believe that you just aren’t cut out for relationships. Every time you get close to friends or business associates you self-sabotage because they would have screwed you over anyway.
I’ve been in those situations way more times than I could ever count and it really stunted my professional and personal growth.
Men were all dogs because one guy broke my heart. All businesses were evil and corrupt because I got fired from one company. Understand that your ability to make and nurture quality relationships goes hand in hand with your ability to succeed.
No man is an island and you cannot do it all by yourself. Oprah did not do it by herself. Not even Jesus Christ did things alone. He had a group of twelve disciples that he sent out all over the world to help him spread the gospel.
The same thing goes for me and you. Freeing yourself and your relationships from the imprisonment of your own limiting beliefs and prejudices is the most powerful thing you could ever do for yourself.
THEY OBSCURE OUR VIEWS OF REALITY
Television programs and magazines teach us many of the limiting beliefs we harbour without being conscious of them.
“No-one is ever as happy as they seem.”
“Life is so hard.”
“Success only comes to a select few.”
And the list goes on and on. When you view life through a messed up lens, everything negative that happens around you becomes the norm. You expect to struggle because it has become the norm for you to struggle.
The fact that you are still living from paycheck to paycheck and have two to three jobs because that’s the best you can do is proof that your limiting beliefs are holding you back.
If you’re a football fan you’ve probably heard of Pele. He was a young Brazilian boy of about 12 years old when he discovered his love for football. His family barely had money for food so Pele would practice his football skills using a rolled up piece of newspaper.
While Pele spent his time kicking that newspaper around, many people around him probably thought he was crazy or should have been doing better things with his time because who wastes their time kicking around garbage, right?
Pele ignored those people because he didn’t see things the way everyone else in his poor neighbourhood did. He believed that there was more than enough success to go around so he worked hard until he became the famous footballer he is today.
What thoughts have you been harbouring that are keeping you from being abundant, prosperous and successful?
Are you being pushed around by the fears in your mind so much that they have begun to distort your reality?
If you constantly doubt yourself, fear failure, criticise yourself and dwell in negative thinking there is absolutely no way you can create a better future for yourself.
RISE ABOVE YOUR LIMITATIONS
The second you put a limit on yourself is the second you fail. That’s right. We only have as many limitations as we place on ourselves so it’s time to rise above those limits. To do this, you need to start challenging your limiting beliefs and use positive affirmations.
Do you believe that you can never run more than 3 miles? Run 5 miles and prove your theories wrong. I used to believe that I would never be able to ride a bicycle and for years I wasn’t able to do so. When I moved to Japan my predecessor told me that bicycles were the most economical means of transportation so it was time to prove myself wrong and you bet I did. Oh, the power of positive thinking!
Stop letting the silly things you believe to be true hold you back from what you’re truly capable of doing. Create new beliefs that will serve you and open the way for success to flow into your life.
One of my beliefs is that I will be able to make a million dollars by the end of next year. I believe it. I see it and no-one can tell me otherwise. This belief affects every single part of my life. It makes me work ten times harder on any project, gives me permission to stop asking for permission and start acting. It also takes my faith in God and His promise of increase to the next level.
You truly begin to fly when you let go of self-limiting beliefs and allow your mind, heart and aspirations to rise to greater heights.
