Have you been feeling stuck in life? You’re in your late 20s or 30s and everyone around you is building their dream career while you’re still trying to figure out what the heck to do with your own life? I’ve been there. I saw a great video on Facebook called “It’s okay to fail. It’s okay to not know the answer.” I literally froze when I saw it. This video was speaking to me. Until a few months ago, I thought that by your mid-20s you should have your life together.
You need to have your dream career, be married and be on your way to having it all wrapped up in a neat bow. I now realize that’s just rubbish. Not everyone’s life turns out this way. What do you do when your life didn’t go the way you’d planned? Have you failed as an adult? No way! It took me such a long time to figure out the answers I needed and I don’t want you to feel stuck in your rut forever. Here are 7 things you need to do when you’re feeling stuck in life.
“Life is about trusting your feelings, taking chances, finding happiness, learning from the past and realizing everything changes.”
Do These 7 Things When You’re Feeling Stuck In Life
When I was in high school, I imagined myself becoming a successful lawyer. Then I realized that some lawyers tend to lie based on their line of work and that conflicted with my beliefs so I changed my mind.
In university, I was determined to become a marketing manager. I’d be writing campaigns and spearheading marketing departments all over the country.
Then life hit me. Toxic relationships happened, financial issues happened and I slowly lost my way. I no longer knew what I wanted to do with my life.
I was just living within the moment and trying my best to not look too far ahead.
You’ve probably tried everything you can think of, and you’re just done. Don’t give up just yet.
The steps I’m going to talk about have helped me tremendously. They allowed me to finally figure out what to do with my life and find my purpose after living for so long feeling like I was just taking up space.
#1 STOP WHAT YOU’RE DOING
The first thing you need to do is stop what you’re doing right now.
Whenever you’re feeling stuck in life, it’s because something just doesn’t fit. Something about the way you’re currently living needs to change.
To help you clearly understand what needs to be changed, you need to stop for a moment and think.
Think about all the things that are currently going on in your life. What makes you happy? What annoys you to death?
Often times, the things that annoy us are the very things we need to change about our life.
- Do a mental pause on things and grab some pen and a paper, and
- Make as big a list as you can of all the things that immediately come to life when you say the phrase “My life would be much better if I stopped doing ____.”
#2 RE-EVALUATE YOUR GOALS
Now it’s time to re-evaluate the goals you set for yourself when you first decided what to do with your life.
You need to take an honest look at these goals and decide if they’re getting you to where you really want to be and are they still the kind of goals you want to be setting.
We often make ostentatious goals when we’re younger and never really gave them much thought. Now it’s time to take a look at them with fresh eyes.
Albert Einstein once said, “You can’t solve a problem with the same level of thinking that created it.” He was right.
If the goals you previously set for yourself are the reason you’re stuck in the rut you’re currently in then it’s time to set new goals.
It’s time to figure out, based on the list you made in step 1, what things make you happy and how can you turn these seemingly insignificant activities into a career and a passion you love.
If you’re having trouble getting started, this post that speaks about SMART goals will help you out.
#3 MAKE A PLAN FOR YOURSELF
Now it’s time to take what you’ve learned so far and make a plan for yourself going forward. You don’t need to know exactly what you want to do with your life to make a plan, you just need to have an idea of the kind of life you want to have someday.
When coming up with your plan of action, it would really help to have an outside, unbiased opinion from someone whose opinions you trust.
A mentor is a great person you can talk to. If you’re feeling stuck in life, it is also helpful to get information from new sources.
This is also the time to start setting mini-goals to help you to get to the larger goals you created for yourself.
What do you need to do right now or within the next week to get to the next step? And, how long will it take you to move between steps?
You can even journal your ideas on a daily basis. The more you write down the kind of life that you want to make for yourself, the more you’ll start seeing patterns in your writings and the greater chance you’ll have of figuring out exactly where you need to be going.
#4 GIVE YOURSELF TIME TO FAIL
There are so many of us who, though we feel stuck in life, are afraid of moving forward out of the fear of failing. I am not only speaking to you guys, I’m speaking to myself as well because for years I let the fear of failure prevent me from making changes in my life.
That’s out biggest mistake. Some of the most successful people in the world such as Mary Kay Ash and Eleanor Roosevelt failed a dozen times over before finally discovering their purpose in life, and so will you.
Give yourself time to fail. Discover exactly who you are including your likes, dislikes and passions.
Step outside your comfort zone so you can understand what works and what doesn’t work. Once you understand what’s working and what’s not, that’s when you’ll get past the negative feelings and actually gain valuable insight to help you make changes that will last.
#5 MAKE CHANGES TO YOUR ROUTINE
Making changes to your routine is an important step on the journey to self improvement. You can’t expect to keep doing the same things you were before and get different results.
You need to start making changes today. It happens to the best of us, but simple changes in our daily routines can have huge results.
Start out by looking at the daily habits you’ve been forming over the years. Which habits are negative and should be removed completely?
A great way to develop a new routine is to look at some successful women you admire. Is there anything they do every day that keeps them productive?
What are the habits they’ve removed from their lives that have had positive effects?
You don’t need to have the same goals as they do to learn a thing or two from those who’ve been there.
#6 FIND AMBITIOUS, SUPPORTIVE PEOPLE
The main area you should try to focus on as you get out of your rut is growing as a woman and as a person. This can only happen if you surround yourself with people who are also learning and growing.
When you’re feeling stuck in life and you are constantly around other people who are also stuck, it becomes difficult to get un-stuck if you see where I’m going.
You need people who, even if they don’t know how to get there yet, have goals and dreams and are working every day to get one step closer to them.
They’re setting mini goals, making the necessary sacrifices and trying their hardest not to stay in the same place for too long.
The 5 people you spend the most of your time with, is who you end up becoming. So make your choices wisely.
#7 KEEP GOING
You’ll probably understand by this point that life is not always easy. Sometimes it gets black and dirty and it’s not always easy to keep going but for this to work, you need to keep putting one foot in front the other.
If you want to become the best version of yourself, you need to learn to push past barriers that get in your way and never stop.
Stop focusing on all the people who are seemingly more successful and focus on your own journey.
Celebrate your wins as you grow and get closer and closer to your end goal.
I recently completely rebranded my blog because I now understand who I’m writing for and what your needs are. This has been a slow process with many downs along the way.
But every time I see an up I celebrate the heck out of it because I know that slowly but surely I’m getting to my end goal.
Never take the easy way out. Keep fighting for the kind of life you want. Never give up on your happiness because you’re worth it.
IT’S OKAY NOT TO KNOW
No matter how successful other people may appear, the truth is that no-one knows exactly what they’re doing all the time. And that’s perfectly okay!
We’re always learning, always growing as human beings and that’s a beautiful thing. I am not who I was at 18 years old, 21 years old or even 28.
Stay true to who you want to become and don’t be tempted to try to live like all the Insta Babes you see online.
Remember that every successful person was in your shoes at one point but if you keep going success will come.
The important part is to enjoy the journey there and be proud of who you become in the process.
If you found this list of the 7 things you need to do when feeling stuck in life helpful, then you will enjoy these tips to help you become more productive in less than a week.
