Do you truly own your life? Have you ever found yourself wishing you lived a more impactful, fulfilling life than the one you have right now? Every person we come across has the potential to be amazing. Regardless of our background or anything we’ve experienced, hidden within us is greatness waiting to be unleashed. What determines if we can unleash that greatness and maximize our true potential are the decisions we make each and every day. Our futures are literally up to us and in this post, I’m going to show you exactly how to own your life and your potential.
“When we deny the story, it defines us but when we own the story, we can write a brave new ending.” Brene Brown
How To Own Your Life And Your Potential
When you own your life and your potential, it means you take complete responsibility for everything that happens to you. You are conscious that each decision, each small but intentional action you take leads you closer and closer to the life you want.
It also means that you have the goal of becoming the absolute best version of yourself. So how can we do that?
DEFINE THE BEST VERSION OF YOURSELF
The first step in owning your life and maximizing your potential is defining what you believe to be the best version of yourself because this is what you’re working towards. When we define the best version of ourselves, we open up to the possibilities of what we’re actually able to achieve regardless of how uncomfortable it might make us.
For me, becoming the best version of myself means fulfilling my dream of building a worldwide community of empowered women who seek to inspire and empower other women.
It also means that I have helped as many women as I can to embrace the awesomeness that lies dormant within them even when they can’t see it themselves.
This might be completely different for you. When you have a specific vision and define why that vision is your idea of success and happiness, it gives you something concrete that you can now strive to make happen.
Take a minute and really think about who you are right now. Create a movie in your mind and visualize who you want to become and why. What kinds of things does this person do? Is there anything in this movie that makes you truly happy? Why is this so important to you?
Defining the best version of yourself can indeed be an uncomfortable experience, but it is so essential.
By taking the time to reflect on who you are right now including your values and beliefs, it gives you an opportunity to grow tomorrow.
STOP MAKING EXCUSES FOR WHY YOU CAN’T
Many times when we think about owning our life, there is this fear that no-one will believe in us or our message, and we’re doomed to fail before we even begin. The thing is that it’s not that people don’t believe in us, it’s really just an excuse to stop believing in ourselves.
When I was younger, I wanted to do amazing things and be a successful businesswoman one day. As a teenager, the possibility of this dream coming true seemed more and more difficult and I started to believe that I just couldn’t do it.
I didn’t have the money to go to all of these fancy colleges and take every single class I needed to succeed. There was absolutely no time to study, participate in extra-curricular activities and still have a life.
The list of excuses kept getting longer and longer.
We need to stop making excuses for why we can’t do something and start believing that we can.
This past week, I’ve been listening to a book called “She Means Business” by Carrie Green and her words have honestly transformed my life.
In her book, Carrie stated how she would constantly make excuses for why she couldn’t build the business of her dreams and one of her biggest excuses was lack of money.
So someone asked her this: “If I was to give you $100,000.00 to invest in your business today, what would you do with it?” She had absolutely no idea. It wasn’t the money that was standing in the way of her dreams, it was her.
Stop making excuses. Decide within yourself that the movie you created in your mind is going to happen. Visualize yourself succeeding so much that you have no choice but to make it happen.
SET SMALL GOALS THAT HAVE HUGE IMPACT
“It’s never those huge decisions that make the difference. It’s those small, intentional changes each day that truly have an impact.”
Last Friday I published my very first 21-day challenge. I call it the “#SmallChangesBiggerMe” challenge because every day, for the next 21 days, I am challenging everyone participating to complete small tasks that will have a big impact and help them to develop a mindset for growth and habits for success.
By adopting the small, intentional habits you form throughout the challenge you start owning your life and your potential.
For example, if your goal is to become a master violinist within the next three (3) years you’ll start out by learning what each note is and how to make that sound.
You’ll then move on to learning how to play one song per day (or weekly) and constantly practice those songs until you realize your dream. Am I right?
When I started blogging, I really sucked at writing engaging posts and showing my personality in my writing. So I made a promise to myself that I would practice writing every single day, a small paragraph each time until I was able to develop a writing style of my own. Almost a year later, I can confidently say that my writing has improved ten-fold.
Set small goals that will lead you to achieve even bigger goals and slowly tick them off your list. Focus on those small things you can do differently each day or each week and you’ll start to realize the power that lies in the little things.
CLEAR THE CLUTTER FROM YOUR LIFE
To make way for your new take on life, you’re going to have to get rid of all internal and external clutter. This clutter can come in the form of resentment against someone who’s hurt you in the past, regrets because of things you never got to do or even physical clutter in your living space.
The problem is that so many of us have been carrying around clutter with us for years and years, and after a point, the clutter begins to take over our lives and leaves us sitting in the passenger seat.

Clearing out the clutter from your life might seem like a daunting task but it is such a powerful tool to truly transform our lives and own your potential.
When you get rid of all the things weighing you down and hindering your progress it opens up space for new possibilities. It also enables you to see what’s truly important in your life, and what serves you no purpose.
You’re able to take more control of what you experience each day because you’re no longer letting the clutter steer the wheel.
By holding on to past hurts and grudges you won’t be able to live the life you’re supposed to. Somewhere in the back of your mind, you’ll always believe you’re not worthy enough for good things to happen.
LIVE YOUR TRUTH & LOVE YOUR LIFE
When you live your truth and love your life, it means that you accept everything that makes you “you”. You accept your flaws, your failures, your successes and understand that you are more than capable of living an authentic life that feels good to you.
So many of us are constantly trying to fit in with everyone else that we pressure ourselves and struggle to not be seen. When we do this we suffocate the essence of who we are and our feelings and emotions become stifled until we lose that which makes us special.
We need to know our truth in order to live our truth. To become the highest version of ourselves, we need to let go of those feelings of conformity and be brave enough to reveal who we truly are.

In Japan, I am constantly stared at because not only am I a foreigner I am a black foreigner. When I first started my job, there was this overwhelming pressure to try to be and behave the same way my Japanese colleagues were.
After a while, I felt foolish because I was trying to stifle who I was and had become someone I no longer recognized and that scared me.
Get rid of those filters you carry around all the time. Accept who you are so you can own the life you’re living instead of living the life you own.
Live your truth in the here and now. Inside you lies your true self just waiting to burst out and start living.
CONSTANTLY PURSUE PERSONAL GROWTH
Constantly pursuing personal growth and development has become a mission of mine. I understand that to take responsibility for my life I need to always be growing, maturing and learning new things.
When you choose to keep learning and growing, it can have a profound impact on the life you’re currently living and will live in the future.
Start stretching yourself and focus on giving and gaining something new each day. When you invest in improving yourself, you’ll learn the lessons and the tips you need to own every part of your life and maximize your potential.
